Sapphire Jewellers has been established
since 1959 when Raphael Azzopardi, the youngest son of Carmelo
Azzopardi who was one of Malta's leading jewellers, opened his
business in Prince of Wales Road, Sliema. Initially, Raphael,
known to his friends as Effie, specialised in Giftware and Crystalware
articles. Following the opening of his shop, he also beacme
a direct importer of many giftware articles and had a large
distribution all over the island.
Times change and gradually, following in his
fathers footsteps, Effie introduced Jewellery in his shop
and by then Sapphire Jewellers had become a Sliema household
name. In the late 70's, Effie was joined in the business by
his only son Pio who decided to follow and continue the familly
tradition. In the late 90's Effie passed on the business to
his son who in turn opened anotyher shop in a more tourist
orientated part of sliema, this time at il-Piazetta, Tower
Road.
